“Save the whale” she writes on the blackboard. Beached and in danger, the tiny snail goes for help raising the alarm at the local school. The snail seeing it all.īut all is not well as the whale gets upset by the ear splitting roar of pleasure crafts in a small bay and swims too close to shore. Deep down caves where toothy sharks grins and colourful corals where stripy fish swim. Dolphins, turtles, brown bear and eagles. Julia Donaldson weaves a lovely rhyming tale as the snail rides the whales tail around the world. The tide goes in and out and day turns to night, with lighthouse beacon and twinkling stars setting the scene for the Humpback whales arrival. He perfectly captures the atmosphere of a little English port and the changing views of a busy harbour. Axel Scheffler is a master of children’s illustration. I want to teach him that, though life's unfair, he still has incomparable value in the eyes of his heavenly Father. I know he'll grow up with stories of having been made to feel 'other' because of the color of his skin. Inquisitive, fiercely affectionate, staunchly opinionated, he sees the world through eyes of wonder and has yet to become jaded by society's cruelty. No little boy could be more loved by his parents. Her new neighbor, Catalina, sees Ellie for her true self and beyond her physical appearance. She finds refuge and support in her new therapist and her father, who advocates for her, even when advocacy leads to arguments with Ellie’s mom. Yet, it’s not all doom and gloom for Ellie. There are no what-ifs or “if you only lost weight” or “your face is so pretty,” etc. In the water, Ellie is weighless and free – free of societal pressures, free of side eyes and judgment. She doesn’t fit in with her peers she doesn’t fit in the right clothes. From her sister, who nicknamed her Splash for her body’s impact when she swims, to her so-called well-intentioned mother researching bariatric surgery and dieting articles, Ellie is sent the consistent message that she doesn’t fit in. Not just by her classmates but also by her own family. The debut novel by Lisa Fipps centers around Ellie, an 11-year-old, who is bullied for her weight. On this year’s Summer Reading list (coming soon!), there is a gem of a book called Starfish. It highlights this message in bright lights. While I’m over here living my best life and admiring the body positive messages from the Lizzos and Ashley Grahams of the world, there is still much work to do when it comes to fat acceptance and body shaming. I know you are going to find this hard to believe, but our society isn’t kind to people that are overweight. “Ninety percent of all problems are caused by people being assholes.” The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers (Wayfarers Book 1) I'd love to hear what others thought about this beautiful space story! I think this book is a fantastic way to recover from a reading slump and improve mood :) I'm so glad I found out about this novel and I'd love to read other works by Chambers! I would highly reccomend this to anyone who wants a comfortable/unintimidating sci fi novel with interesting ideas, wholesome characters, accessible language, steady pacing, and interpersonal relationships. This book was just what I needed during a stressful period. Luckily, it appears that this book is a part of a series, so I'm glad to know that I'll be able to "go" on another adventure with these sweet space characters again (if I can get my hands on a copy of the next book!) I feel a bit sad too, since I feel quite connected to the characters now and I did not want the book to end (I started flipping pages really slowly at the end haha). I really enjoyed how the book focused on interpersonal relationships between all of the different characters, and I loved the little bits of humour and pacing of the story. I feel really warm inside after reading this novel. I just finished reading this very comforting science fiction book. |
